The two main factions of "Transformers" in Beast Wars are descendants of the two main factions in the original cartoon: the Maximals are the descendants of the Autobots and the Predacons are the descendants of the Decepticons.
The leader of the Predacon team is Megatron. He and his forces are a splinter group on the hunt for powerful crystals known as Energon, to be used in a ploy for power and dominance.
A Maximal exploration ship, led by Optimus Primal, is sent to stop them. Together the ships plunge through a time/space phenomenon created by the transwarp device during their battle in space, and crash-land on a mysterious planet.
The planet is found to be rich in deposits of raw Energon, to the point that it proves to be poisonous to both factions' robot forms, forcing them to take on alternate organic forms for protection until their robot forms are needed.
Thus the robots take on the beast forms of recognizable animals including mammals, birds, dinosaurs, arachnids, and insects.
What's right with it?
It’s a great follow on from and is in the same continuity as G1 Transformers. The continuity rebooted in 2002 with Transformers Armada and has done so several times since as well
Starting with this series the concepts of the Spark, basically the "soul" inside a Transformer body, and the Allspark are added to the mythos of Transformers. These have been used excessively since in cartoons, comics, and other media.
It has an awesome voice cast, none of the voices seem out of place, Yeeeeeesssss
What’s wrong with it?
Some moments are extremely goofy, kind of stops after the first series or so
A lot of the character changes in appearance that happened were due to Hasbro wanting new toys in their line. The writers manage to fit them into great storylines though and they don’t feel too crammed in just for the sake of it
Earlier in the series everything is so brown! Gets more colourful later on
The Agenda parts 1-3 and Optimal Situation
In this episode, the Maximals are tracking a Transwarp Wave that occurred due to an explosion a few episodes back. It is due to hit Cybertron and when it hits the Cybertronians will know where it originated from and will send transport to get our heroes back home
Unfortunately there is a Predacon satellite blocking the signature so it never reaches home. Instead they send Covert Agent Ravage to take care of the renegade Megatron where he plans to take him back for his crimes and to keep things a little discreet
Things don’t go according to plan is a bit of an understatement
That’s just the plot for the first part, what follows is probably the best homage to the original Transformers series and Ravage is Russian ^_^
I won’t spoil the rest, If you’re a Transformers fan it’s a must see
Ravage: Greetings Megatron. In the name of the Pax Cybertronia and the Predacon Alliance, you are under arrest
Cheetor: Aw, forget him, big R! You and I can go to the Six Lasers Over Cybertron amusement park. There's the Space Slide, and the Galaxy Coasters...
Rattrap: Kid, don't make me hurt ya!
Rattrap: Man, this thing wasn't built, it was poured.
Optimus Primal: Diecast construction... It's a lost art.
Originally a Predacon he decides to switch sides in the first episode due to not liking how Megatron goes about his business. He’s a respected warrior with a ballsy attitude and has a great episode called “Code of Hero”
Would you believe the intro again?
Mainframe make awesome intros, they did the one for ReBoot too. Love the guitar riffs in this ^_^
Optimus Primal: Well that’s just Prime!
Optimus Primal: Freedom is the right of all sentient beings, Megatron!
Megatron: Then they better stay out of my way!!!
Cheetor: We've got to stop them before they reach the base.
Ratrap: That's your department Sky Cat. Fire up. We'll be right behind you
Dinobot: My weapon is depleted.
Cheetor: I need a running start.
Ratrap: Criminy the pair of ya! I'VE GOTTA DO EVERYTHING?
Blackarachnia: Oh no. You're not saving my life again? AFTER I SHOT YOU?
Silverbolt: It is my duty as a Maximal and a heroic character.
Blackarachnia: You know I like 'em big and stupid but you're really pushing it.
Megatron: Good work Inferno, Now go repair yourself
Inferno: Yes, my queen
Megatron: ...I wish he wouldn't call me that
Originally, Hasbro intended Primal to be a bat and Megatron was to be a crocodile/alligator instead of a gorilla and a tyrannosaurus Rex.
The Predacon Waspinator's beast mode is a female wasp. This was perhaps a deliberate decision, as the female wasp carries a stinger that serves as an effective weapon (and which male wasps do not possess), and such a mode would fit the male (and continually put-upon) Waspinator.
Cheetor is the first character to speak, Scorponok is the first character to fire his weapon, Megatron is the only one ever completely shown before getting a beast mode, and Dinobot is the first character to transform into robot-mode.
I loved this show as a kid and it still stands up to the test of time today
In my opinion this is the best Transformers series anyone has ever done including the originals, but you can watch it on it’s own as well. As the characters are descendants of the originals you don’t need to know any of the continuity but for some episodes like the one I posted above it adds a lot
