The Old West….
A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist.
What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. It's a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend….
What's right with it?
This is a bloody good Western with some added sci-fi goodness
Daniel Craig shines as the action guy as he’s shown before in the Bond’s, but here he has a bit of a mean streak too.
The supporting cast are all great. I’ve loved Keith Carradine’s acting ever since he appeared in Dexter as Special Agent Frank Lundy. Sam Rockwell is also good as Doc, his part feels more natural than some previous roles where he’s been there for the comic relief whereas in this he feels more rounded
What’s wrong with it?
The aliens are okay I suppose. Being an alien and sci-fi fan I know me some aliens and these are pretty generic. Nice chests though. No not boobies, I won’t spoil it but the chests hold an extra surprise
There is a scene at night with fire that seems VERY out of place.
When Jake finds out just what his wrist is capable of
And Daniel Craig’s naked torso ^_^
Doc: I don't know much about boats, but I would say that one's upside down.
So, is this movie based on a comic book? Not a bit of it. Technically it did come out as a comic book before the movie but that isn’t the whole story. Check out the truth here
Director Jon Favreau was constantly harassed with demands to shoot/convert the film in 3-D, but he held his ground, claiming Westerns should only be shot on film.
Although the whole waking up with a wild case of the amnesia seems like it’s been done a million times before in this it feels fresh, you’re asking yourself questions throughout the entire film like just where did that wrist thingy come from? Is Jake part alien? And in the case of Daniel Craig where do they get good dental plans in the Old West?
It’s a nice Summer romp. Not a huge blockbuster like Captain America or Harry Potter, but enjoyable nonetheless.
If you like Cowboy films you should go see it
If you like Alien films it's alright
If you like both? Go see it!
